Bridging the Parenting Gender Gap the Right Way

Bridging the Parenting Gender Gap the Right Way

We all know how parenthood changes a couple's lives completely but it is usually noticed that the onus of parenthood falls more on the mother than the father. This happens due to social conditioning and cultural rules than the laws of biology. Though parenting roles for the mother and father are not defined separately anywhere in the world explicitly, we do see that men and women traverse a different trajectory when it comes to parenthood.

This might not be universally true, but it reflects the stereotyped roles of men and women at home and in the office. The question that still remains is why there hasn't been greater involvement of fathers to complement the mothers, and reduce the parenting burden on women?

Government policies of the day have a vital role in shaping societal beliefs and practices. Key policies such as reproductive rights, equal pay for equal work, and support for balancing work and family can go a long way in bridging the gender gap in parenting. Implementing proper parental-leave policies for men help to build a culture that supports equal parenting. Better yet, implement a gender-neutral parental-leave policy. Many companies also need to make significant organisational decisions that encourage men to share the responsibility of parenting and reject the archaic notion that child care is women's work only.

Having said that, one cannot deny that real change begins from home. As a unit of society, each home and each family can play a pivotal role in influencing societal attitudes. We have seen that when men and women test and put themselves in “non-traditional” roles, they grow as a person and a couple and experience better self-fulfilment. This tends to have lasting results on society, especially when the new, “non-traditional” behaviours are self-enforced.

Parenting is, no doubt an uphill task, and it is something both the parents are inexperienced in. However, the task becomes much less daunting, and more of a cherished life experience in the long run, if both parents handle it together. Parents bring different approaches to the table on a variety of things that speak to their different world views. While mothers are known to be detail-oriented and multi-taskers, fathers tend to focus on the big picture and try to build leadership, confidence, and character.

It is worth noting here that these roles are easily reversible, depending on what particular strengths each parent has when it comes to parenting. The father can take over the mom's responsibilities of care-giving, while the mother emphasises on their child's studies, career, discipline, and personality-building. Irrespective of that, active parenting by both mother and father is important. Whatever their roles are in the house, parents need to support one another and provide their children a fine balance of love, care, and discipline, because this ultimately shapes an infant into a well-rounded personality as they grow up.

While both the parental perspectives are important, there are certainly vital aspects of children's upbringing such as skincare and healthcare which no two parents differ much on. That is why, all conscious parents are increasingly vouching for organic products, choosing certified organic soap and certified organic baby cream, because they protect their delicate skin, build immunity, and conserve the environment. Looking at the bigger picture, it makes for a sound environment-friendly decision that secures a healthier future for their children.

There is still a long way to go to achieve equality in parenting. And the work starts with us.
